Do things happen for a reason?

Two and half years in a relationship with someone you thought you really cared for, but at the end it just seems nothing. But then when you try and introspect on the things that happened you believe that things do happen for a reason. In my case it seems that my entire life somehow still revolves around this relationship .

Come July, 2007 someone told me that their plans for higher education had finally taken shape and the desired branch and college were mentioned to me. This sparked me to go through their website seeing whether it was a potential place where I could apply. It just wasn’t! So then I decided to look at colleges in and around that area. Finally I came across University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Looking through their site I suddenly decided to develop a strong fetish for Aerospace Engineering, I must confess here that I was purely interested in Mechanical Engineering only. Thus my pursuit for the university began, securing of vital information from Indians and couple of my seniors. Little did I know while all this was happening that the actual reason for which I was applying to this university would never happen.

Almost six months after that doomed day I secured admission into the university, I had hardly even thought I'd end up taking it because of the cost and the way the graduate coordinator behaved. Ironically so I remember even telling that someone that I would not take up Ann Arbor. Somehow or the other I just landed up taking it.

Whether it is the right decision or not I just cannot say, only time will have to tell. But what I do know is that sometimes you may have thousand opportunities lying at your threshold and yet you just might end up doing something quite unexpected.

I know people would love to criticize me here and say that I am being an idiotic baboon. But the thing is I am sure all of us have asked ourselves many times ‘Do things happen for a reason?’ We can either question the outcome or accept the path already laid out for us and make the best of it. Sometimes its worth introspecting as it helps you realize alls not lost, there has been some good out of it!

I have often found myself cribbing about the process -- only to realize later that the end result of a seemingly bad process couldn't have been any better (even with a more likable process).

Cryptic huh? Let me digress a bit. Kaka's first blog post reminds me of my recent passionate following of Hillary Clinton's run for US presidency. I was just, plain and simple, excited at the prospect of a woman at the top. Barack Obama, to me, was nothing more than another man determined to establish his supremacy and sexist as usual. I loathed the campaign he run, and hated his sugar-coated words. Now, that the reality has sunk in, my introspection reveals that I can actually be at peace with his presidency as well. I have begun to respect and admire him, and better, get inspired from him!

The gist: Of the many paths visible to us, we simply get carried away by one, and tend to downplay every other -- no matter how attractive that could be. Only when we reluctantly tread that path do we acknowledge that it could offer a better proposition.

Kaka, I have known you since four years as a roommate and a close friend. I am confident that the path you've chosen (aerospace engineering) is best-suited for you. You might have unexpectedly ended up at Michigan, but you know what? Surprises are part of life, and often the best part.

Good luck,
Vikram

Congratulations on a fine start!
The post reminds me of something i read a while back:
"Reason is itself a matter of faith. It is an act of faith to assert that our thoughts have any relation to reality at all."

I often believe that things happen and it is us who try to attach a reason (or more) to it.

Bodies fall on Earth coz of gravity (a more precise saying would be that both bodies attract each other, but because earth is massive we cant notice it moving); Sun gives us light and heat(after 8 minutes from the time it leaves its upper surface); Brain reacts to certain things etc etc... All this used to happen and it was people who gave reasons to it. Had the scientific development never taken place, still things would have happened ...

In the end, I think its better to accept whats happening and be the best with the situation than giving reasons for it or atleast trying to attach reasons for the events.

This blog was destined to come up; and perhaps destined to stay... whether you may or may not have joined UMich .. lol

All the best !!!
